Our History

St John's Highton is part of the world-wide Anglican community of churches.

We first gathered for worship in 1858. A building was constructed in 1867, and St John's reflected the local community, which was essentially semi- rural. As the suburb of Highton grew, so did St John's, teaching young people the Christian faith and providing spiritual care in the community.

In 1990, a major building expansion took place, while the community which is St John's continues to grow numerically and in faith.

In 2008 our group of congregations expanded to include groups meeting at 8am, 10am, 5pm and 7pm. While the 7pm congregation concluded in 2011, our existing three congregations continue to comprise groups of growing Christians who love the Lord and look to make Christ's love known.

In 2008 our church also thanked God and celebrated 150 years of Christians meeting together as a church. You can find our History booklet here: 150 Year History produced for St John's 150th celebrations Sept. 7 2008.

In 2014/15 we had a significant upgrade to expand our facilities to better serve our community into the future.

Even more than buildings, every day as a church we look to add new pages to our history with men, women, boys and girls coming to know love and serve the Lord Jesus. This is history that counts to us, because eternal life with God is made up of all who call on Christ today. Does this include you? We pray it does!
